MERGANSER CRUISE AREA IN
2021
During 2021
we are offering cruises based on the canals of the Champagne Region
in France.
The Champagne cruise embraces
part of the area bounded by Reims,
Bar le Duc and Joinville. Reims,
which we visit during the cruise is a large regional capital and is
notable for its magnificent Cathedral. Not only an important centre
of the champagne wine industry it also has a vibrant cosmopolitan
atmosphere with attractive shops and cafés. To the South of Reims lies Châlons en Champagne, an important and attractive
town, where we moor close to the excellent town centre with good
shops and another fine cathedral; from here we visit the nearby
basilica of l’Epine, a remarkable example of 15th Century
Gothic architecture set in the middle of the chalky Champagne fields. Vitry le François
gives us a chance to visit a typical French market and the wood
framed churches of the champagne bocage. From Vitry we also visit our own champagne supplier located in the
village
of Bassuet,
a small area to the South of the vignoble which produces some of the
finest wines of the region. The route
of our cruise is good for towpath cycling and walking and offers, in
addition to the planned visits, an opportunity to visit local
villages beside which we moor the barge. Passengers should note that
our inclusive tours depend on availability and the date and no
particular visit is guaranteed; some champagne houses accept no
tours during the harvesting of the grapes and local holidays may
also limit our options. Reviews of the cruise may be viewed at
Reviews.
In June 2016 the regional daily, L'Union, published a double spread
about the cruise. Text, images and translation may be viewed at l'union-article.
