MERGANSER
CRUISE ITINERARY FRANCE 2008
Ligny en Barrois to Nancy: June 7th Nancy to
Charmes: June 14th
LIGNY EN BARROIS to NANCY
On your arrival at Merganser you will have time to
visit Ligny en Barrois, a medium sized market town of ancient lineage.
There is time to explore this town before our first dinner aboard Merganser.
The following morning we set off along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin ,
passing through closely spaced locks which take us to our village mooring for
the night. The next day we reach the first summit level of the canal, passing
through the 5km.long Mauvages tunnel.. Once through the tunnel we descend
more locks to reach Void and a long second summit pound. The canal now
starts its final descent to Nancy, passing the interesting town of Toul, an
interesting town where the ramparts built by Vauban remain in almost pristine
condition. Nancy itself is full of charm and elegance. There is time to see
the city’s fine architecture and monuments before our farewell dinner aboard
Merganser.
Buffet lunch on deck
On your arrival at Merganser you will have time to
settle in and, before dinner aboard Merganser, visit Nancy, a city full
of charm and elegance. The following
morning there is time to complete your investigation of the city before we
start our cruise. Turning onto the Canal des Vosges we drop down towards
Richardménil. Cruising past peaceful villages and infrequent locks we
can appreciate to the full the woods and small fields of the Lorraine
countryside. This stretch of the cruise is extremely rural, our moorings being
for the most part in isolated, often wooded, locations. The cruise continues
through this remote region, accompanied by the infant Moselle, until we reach Charmes,
a small market town mostly remembered nowadays for its pivotal role in the Battle
of the Marne during the First World War.
